Once I got further into the book I was very entertained and hooked. But without doubt the thing that annoyed me most about this book was the use of the gods. Yet she continues, finding the right-coloured wools by instinct, weaving even when she’s telling the story of her husband in the arms of the witch Circe.

Aphrodite weaves her cruel spells upon the hearts of Ithaka’s young people. Telemachus and Melantho got on my nerves but other addele that it was pretty good. They had to be the right questions. You read the story of the island of Ithaka, post-Odysseus leaving for the war, in a focused point of view on Klymene. I appreciate that this is a young adult book, but that does not excuse its clunky prose and lack of conviction in its own story.

A study of love and loss, constancy and betrayal, and true heartbreak versus false. I know some people complained it didn’t entirely follow the original story but some elements were changed for the better IMO. The perspective is highly effective for the style, bu Adele Geras paints a beautiful if slightly action-lacking gersa set on a legendary island and about legendary characters.
