For now, the rating will be 4 stars, but upon rereading some poems from this collection that have now become some of my favorites of all time like Kaddish I might give it 5 stars.

Feb 26, Katie rated it really liked it Shelves: This all makes Ginsberg’s poetry some intense, dark and challenging stuff. She went in and out of mental hospitals and was treated with medication, insulin shock therapy, and electroshock therapy.

However, when you place those early poems alongside Kaddish and Other Poemsas Penguin has hhowl in this Modern Classics edition, they somehow take on a deeper, more spiritual character, and even their most self-consciously hip lines re-emerge as sincere if naive expressions of spiritual yearning and exploration. Anguished, rhythmic stream of consciousness poetry of Ginsberg is transfixing, indeed confronting at times, but emanates his life long search for elusive fundamental truths, free of conventional structural impositions.
