On that subject, it sounds like the author did his homework. Aug hjortserg, Delee rated it it was amazing Shelves: The movie moves the story from New York to New Orleans, though, and in that respect, the black magic and other supernatural elements may make more sense.
It seems that Favorite was a practitioner of the dark arts and supposedly conjured up the devil during a Black Mass. The novel was also aflling with precision and clarity that offers a detailed image of the cultural times and the individual characters.

Like other noir PI novels, this one is violent, at times, brutal. Hjortsgerg was busted up pretty bad in the war. Astonishingly, I enjoyed the book more abgel time than on the first read. What puts this novel in the dark fiction category was the voodoo and Satanic worship which both play a role in the plot.
For the next few years he lived in the Caribbean and Europe, writing two unpublished novels, the second of which earned him a creative writing fellowship at Stanford University.
This is a crime-noir novel, written in the 70’s but actually taking place in the early 50’s.
He gets his information from talking to people, looking things up, calling hjortsbefg favours, and so on. At one point in William Hjortsberg’s masterful horror novel “Falling Angel,” Epiphany Proudfoot, year-old voodoo priestess, tells our detective hero Harry Angel “you sure know a lot about the city.

The movie disappeared for years. Better known as Johnny Favorite, he was a talented jazz musician. I don’t know if the author grew up in this town in the ’50s or just did a remarkable research job, but the reader really does get the impression that this book which came out in was written a few decades earlier. Though, I like the idea of reading horror in a hjortsbedg fiction. Fortunately, I had long since forgotten the plot of the 80s movie Angel Heart or this would have been spoiled for me.
Welcome to another edition of In The Spotlight. Now the movie is readily available. I liked the character of Angel even though he played fast and loose with the law, he was well written and Harry Angel is a private detective, hired by a fakling client to find singer, Johnny Favourite.

Being a fan of the twisted supernatural story-line meets hard boiled detective, I instantly purchased it.
When the attorney Herman Winesap calls him and says he has a job for him, Harry has no idea that he is about to descend into the darkest, most terrifying case of his career. Hjortsberg, on his website, talks about why he sat the novel in I think your degree of appreciation for a book like this depends on your predilection for horror fiction. Or at least that’s the story.

If there’s one genre of fiction that I love just as much as horror, it’s crime noir. Angdl required Address never made public.
