Francesco Petrarca, known in English as Petrarch, was an Italian scholar, poet, and one of the earliest Renaissance humanists.

Petrarch was also known for being one of the first people to call the Middle Ages the Dark Ages. Like the cancionerk Italian poet Dante Alighieri, Petrarch chose to write his most intimate feelings in his native Italian, rather than the Latin customary at that time.
