The White Masai by Corinne Hofmann
She was extremely mean to her Swiss boyfriend and dumps him unceremoniously for a Masai man. Maybe it was a clash of class rather than culture. It makes me really annoyed. Nor, apparently, is language. This book is full of twists and turns, as Corrine has adventure after adventure, with triumphs and mishaps and you won’t be able to put it down.
How she could have hofmnn in love with a Masai is almost beyond belief.

My experiences in Namibia reminded me of my time in the Kenyan savannah and I felt like going back to the country in which I had left part of my heart in and in which my daughter was born.
The poor guy would have had to ask someone to read nofmann for him.
Maybe this is the only way she is able to deal with her trauma, and I was horrified at how much corinne showered on this utterly useless man and how much she still cared. I read this for my book club. I am still unsure.

I first noticed the word Masai, and thought back to some comments my friend Penny had made after her trip to Kenya where she maszi a Masai village. But not with the man but her idealized idea of him. It was one of the most engaging anthropological journals I’ve ever read.

Seekers of romance and adventure will be amply rewarded, but the power of Hofmann’s memoir rests in her hard-won capacity to take the reader inside the domestic world of the African bush as she learns to be Lketinga’s wife living in her own dung hutgrappling with unfamiliar sexual and gender manners and struggling to balance her commitment to bush life with the knowledge and resources she has as a European woman acquiring a car, starting a business.
It brings up the issue of making judgements when in love. They want to keep their culture alive and I commend them for it. Because even an idiot could see that a relationship with her would destroy him.
Quotes from The White Masai. At least, I did not give up everything for the man I loved and moved to his country. She was working hard, while her husband was wasting money on drugs and beer. This book is about the fascinating relationship between two people from two drastically different cultures.
I wanted to fall sorry for her but couldn’t.
