This family sustains the worst kind – the suicide of the middle daughter by jumping off a familiar building. I know people, like Leila who struggles under the weight of responsibilities, real and imagined, placed on her shoulders, and Nina, whose way of dealing with a crisis is to run away from it all and feel the full weight of the guilt afterwards, and realise that bereavement can never be avoided, it can only be postponed.
Solicitous and impatient, guilty and pluckily inquisitive by turns, Leila reveals herself as well as her story. Ffae author included some very moving and raw parts that were extremely well written. But Mah and Leon are rebels against their own choices as well. We learn relatively little about her or, for that matter, about her death.
A theme I initially found was the strong desire for the characters to maintain their family. I consider myself fse rather slow reader as I like to critique things and make notes, but this novel took me about 6 hours to finish.

Nina, more distant, is drawn with less detail and equal sharpness. I think this book, read in a deconstructionist lens, makes a lot of sense when deconstructing what “bones” are, as they signify the unending discovery of centers in our own lives.

The author has some lovely language, but mostly it We read this as a book group selection this September ‘ One thing I found unique was how Ng allowed readers into some of the personal issues of the characters, ,yenne others she left to be private.
So was her unexpected agreement to go on a Hong Kong vacation with Nina shortly after Ona’s death, while Leon, the apparent freebooter, stays home to take care of things. Suppose after a lifetime of hard work, they’re still stuck in the same apartment in the same neighborhood they started out in. This is a beautifully written book.
Showing of 50 reviews. It is Jg and Leon, in fact, who are the real rebels. This book introduced a Chinese family living in America and having to face a horrifying tragedy of a family member committing suicide.
In so doing, she affords us a glimpse at a community that is truly foreign to us. The storyline is interesting. I did not find it distracting, but to each, his own.
