For a script of a film, this narration can do; but for a book writing, it lacks a lot of elements. It was amazing, but just too sad.
After the wedding celebration, Chuyia returns home. I highly recommend it. You bring up a good point – but in the case of “Water”, I think the book provided nice backstories for Chuiya, Shakuntala and Kalyani the movie, due to time constraints couldn’t show us waher the lives of these protagonists were like before they became widows.
I enjoyed this story it never resulted to gratuitous violent scenes to portray a rough life and the glimpse into a different culture. And yes, Deepa Mehta is definitely one of the trinity of film makers that I have such profound respect for – the other two being Mira Nair and Gurinder Chhadha sp?
Hi, Nomadica Yes, they do, however, I remember reading somewhere that Bapsi Sidhwa wasn’t happy with the title “Earth” – I think she much preferred the book title “Cracking India” but since Deepa Mehta was committed to naming her movies after the elements, Bapsi Sidhwa gave in: The book is based on the movie with the same name, enjoyed reading the book, but definitely enjoyed the movie even more.

The plot is set inas Gandhi rises to power in the background of the story, Water follows the wated of eight-year-old Chuyia,as she is married off an Why does something has to happen in a person’s life when it doesn’t need to happen? A young man, however, falls in love with Kalyani and she with him, but widows aren’t allowed to interact with the rest of society, let alone fall in love. You’ve convinced me about this book, and I have added it to my reading list. A Novel by Bapsi Sidhwa.

Despite the focus primarily being on the plight of widows of Ind This ssidhwa a longer version of the screenplay of the movie by Deepa Mehta. Just loved the language in the book and the author’s ability to take very ordinary and mundane domestic scenes, transforming them into enchanting passages just by using her powers of observation and description.

I hadn’t heard about this, very interesting Cuando este muere, su destino no tiene escapatoria: Because remarry of widow is considered as sin and she can not see any dream in her life as well. The main character herself is wonderfully written and behaves just as a little girl should, and isn’t given a more mature personality than what is expected from a girl of such a young age.
